Evelyn Hickey is a native of the Texas Hill Country and began painting after attending Schreiner Institute and Texas Christian University. Her paintings have been accepted in numerous juried shows and have been shown in invitational exhibitions, including one - person shows at the Hill Country Arts Foundation in Kerrville,Slaon Mijangos in San Antonio, The World Trade Center in Dallas, and a two - woman show at the then Schreiner College in Kerrville. Hickey has worked with decorators and designers, painting commissioned works for private and corporate collectors. She is active in local art functions and has served on the board of directors of several art organizations.

Expressionistic faces, florals, and abstractions are the focus of many of Hickey's paintings because she is attracted to the interesting shapes and designs that are inherent in all things. Hickey's style is bold with brilliant and fluid color. Using acrylics, mixed media collage, watercolor and even batik wax on oriental papers, her paintings are rhythmic in an abstracted style.

Hickey also expresses her creative flair by designing and painting quarry tile and mosaics. Used in designer kitchens and patios, theseart pieces are bright, whimsical designs of fish, fruit and animals. Designing unusual, asymmetrical jewelry using semi - precious stones is another outlet for her creativity.

Hickey observes, " The objective of my work is not to make a statement, but rather to capture the emotion and essence of the subject. I want the viewer to experieince a new way of seeing the nuances of each face and form and then to enjoy the total composition. The process of painting itself is my reward. "

Evelyn Hickey currently owns 1550 Gallery in Kerrville, where her studio is located.
